‘Rango’ Dominates Annie Awards, Rango dominated the 39th Annual Annie Awards, which celebrate the hard work of film and television animators.

Gore Verbinski’s absolutely stunning film took home best feature, script, editing, character design and the members’ favourite awards. Best director went to Jennifer Yuh Nelson for her acclaimed sequel Kung Fu Panda 2, which was also awarded best production design. Bill Nighy was celebrated for his voice work as the hilarious Grandsanta in Arthur Christmas.

Patton Oswalt hosted the event at UCLA’s Royce Hall, with ASIFA-Hollywood voting for excellence in animating. In 2010, Disney/Pixar withdrew submissions and support for the awards, but reconsidered their position last summer. It led to a reorganisation of the voting structure, after it was possible for DreamWorks to buy all their employees on to the voting board (Kung Fu Panda beat WALL-E, and How to Train Your Dragon won over Toy Story 3).

After all that, it was Nickelodeon Movies’ Rango who swept the board this year, and deservedly so – read our review here. For the full list of winners for commercials and television visit www.annieawards.org.
