Internet securityInternet security, Journalists covering the Pan American Games, including nearly two dozen Canadians, could be at risk of identity theft or fraud.

Personal information about the media is accessible via the game site, according to an anonymous e-mail to reporters on Monday.

The informant, identified by the pseudonym of Galileo Trueman, emailed reporters claiming that he or she could access the personal information and includes the full name of the journalist, date of birth and the first five digits of your passport. The information was correct.

The Canadian Olympic Committee has demanded the Organizing Committee of Guadalajara 2011 (COPAG) correct the problem.

“We contacted this morning COPAG were already aware of the problem. We ask that all information on the Canadian media be removed from their website immediately,” said Canada’s chef de mission, Jacques Cardyn. “COPAG is working on it with a group of IT, and federal police.”

The informant claimed to have no affiliation with the Pan Am or website of the Pan American Games.

“I also want to clarify that in no way am I a hacker or cut this website,” he or she wrote. “I found the hole in the website just by chance…

“I’m sure someone with bad intentions could easily gain access and abuse of this security hole.”

Almost all of the 21 Canadian journalists accredited to cover the Games received the email, along with reporters and photographers from the Associated Press, Reuters and Agence France Presse, along with other media, locally and internationally.

The informant said the database includes names, pictures, parents’ names, addresses and passport numbers for the “thousands of members of the media in almost every country in the Americas and in partnership with newspapers , television, photography, etc. ”

More than 1,400 journalists covering the Games.
