Indiana Governor Daniels, Senior Photographer Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels talked about how Indiana’s Major Moves project is improving roads and bridges around the state at the Purdue Road School conference. This project includes the move of US 231 around Purdue’s campus.
Governor Mitch Daniels spoke during lunch to the Purdue Road School on Wednesday about how Indiana’s Major Moves road and bridge project is improving travel and commerce within the state. The room was filled with attendees and Purdue administrators.
Gov. Mitch Daniels said infrastructure projects around the state are progressing faster than planned at his speech to Purdue’s civil engineering committee on Wednesday.

The Purdue Road School hosted Daniels in a full ballroom of the Purdue Memorial Union. He spoke about Major Moves, a 10-year public-private partnership initiative to build new highways and maintain roads throughout the state.

Daniels announced that the part of the project concerning U.S. 31 will be completed ahead of schedule.

“There will be a 3-year acceleration of the southern most leg of U.S. 31, this is going to made possible by yet another innovation of INDOT,” Daniels said. “It’s going to be bid all-in-one bundle and we’ve secured the agreement to reroute traffic during the entire time of construction.”

Daniels said this was a notable announcement because it signifies the pace of work being done in the state.

“There’s been a lot of luck involved here. We have been building at a record rate when most of the country isn’t building at all,” Daniels said. “The competition for us has been terrific, we have routinely been running 25 percent or 30 percent below engineering estimates. Did you ever think you would use the term ‘government underrun.’?”
