Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy Rose Lee (January 8, 1911 to April 26, 1970) was an American burlesque artist, famous for her strptase. She was also an actress, author and playwright, whose memory was made in 1957 the musical and film Gypsy. Gypsy Rose Lee was born Rosa Louise Hovick in Seattle, Washington in 1911, although her mother later razed for three years before the two ages of her daughters. She was first known by her first name, Louise. His mother, Rose Hovick (nee Rose Evangeline Thompson), was a teenage bride fresh from a convent where she married the Norwegian and American John Olaf Hovick, who was a seller of advertising in newspapers and a reporter from the Seattle Times. Louise’s sister, Ellen Evangeline Hovick (better known as actress June Havoc), was born in 1913.
