A Rochester woman who was part of a large group of people who traveled throughout New York stealing wallets from hospitals and colleges was arrested on a warrant Tuesday, city police said

Kiara K. Asante, 21, is charged with second-degree forgery, fourth-and-fifth degree criminal possession of stolen property and attempted petit larceny.

Asante was already in Monroe County Jail on similar charges and was returned to that jail after her arraignment in City Court Tuesday, Detective Charles Dudek said.

She was one of three people police had been searching for since a theft at United Memorial Medical Center on Sept. 11.

At the time, police issued an alert after a man entered the hospital and stole a wallet from an employee’s purse. The man an two women were later involved in using credit cards stolen from the wallet at a local business. The three were caught on surveillance cameras.

Police believe the thefts began in July and happened at more than 30 college campuses and hospitals, including some as far away as Watertown.

As many as 15 people may have been involved.

The break in the case came in mid-November when Asante and Keith Carter, 29, of Rochester, were arrested in Monroe County.

Police there said Carter likely was the ringleader and would enlist the help of acquaintances, according to a story by WS-EX-C-TV at the time.

Dudek said he also has an arrest warrant for two others, including Carter, who is believed to be the man entering UMMC Sept. 11. Carter is in Monroe County Jail.
