Mahmoud Jibril told a news conference in Tripoli that it was time to launch a new, united Libya.  Video footage has been broadcast around the world showing a battered body that Gaddafi says.

He was ousted in August after 42 years in power. The ICC has been searching for his arrest.

After a day of conflicting reports and rumors, Mr. Gabriel told the press conference: “We’ve been waiting for this moment for so long, Muammar Gaddafi, has been murdered.”.

Video granules had previously been circulating among the soldiers that appear to show the body NTC Gaddafi.

The video shows a large number of fighters screaming NTC chaotic scenes around a khaki-clad body, which has blood coming out of the face and neck.

Another video aired by Al-Jazeera television showed a body being dragged through the streets that the channel was Gaddafi said.

A fighter told BBC NTC found hiding in a hole Gaddafi in Sirte, and former leader begged him not to shoot.

The fight showed reporters a Golden Gun said he had taken from Gaddafi.

Arab television channels showed footage of soldiers around two major drains where journalists said Colonel Gaddafi was found.

NTC supporters gathered in towns and cities to celebrate the reports of the death of Colonel.
Youths fired guns into the air, and drivers honked horns in celebration.

His death came after weeks of intense fighting in Sirte, one of the last remaining pockets of resistance.

NATO, which has carried out a bombing campaign in Libya for months, said it had carried out an air strike earlier on Thursday that affected pro-Gaddafi two vehicles near Sirte.

It was unclear whether the attacks were related to the death of Qaddafi.

Mr. Gabriel promised that the National Transitional Council (CNT) chief Mustafa Abdul Jalil give details of how Gadhafi was killed either on Thursday or on Friday.

Said Mr. Abdul Jalil also officially announced the “liberation of the country”, allowing the NTC to begin to push through democratic reforms leading to elections.

“I think it is for the Libyans to realize it’s time to start a new Libya, a Libyan united, one people, one future,” said Jibril.

He also told the press conference NTC forces chased highlight Gaddafi son, Saif al-Islam.

He had fled in a convoy in the Battle of Sirte, but the NTC was now fighting around him, said Mr. Jibril.

There are also rumors that another son of the colonel, Mutassim, was killed in Sirte.
