Houston Marathon:Olympic medalist Shalane Flanagan won the women race in the Aramco Houston Half Marathon on Sunday, setting a course record in the first attempt at this distance.

Flanagan covered the 13.1 miles in 1 hour and 9 minutes and 39 seconds beyond the mark 1:10:55 Colleen De Reuck set in 2004.

“I was want to run the longest race for quite some time,” said Flanagan. “I was really excited, but I kept the nerves in the selection.”

Teshome Gelana, Ethiopia, won the Chevron Houston Marathon in course record 2:07:37. Brett Gotcher was the U.S. Supreme, finishing in 2:10:35 in his marathon first.

Holders Teyba Erkesso, and also from Ethiopia, won the men’s marathon in 2:23:52. Beat on her and of course scored nearly 30 seconds. The U.S. Supreme Paige Higgins, finished fourth in 2:33:22.

Flanagan bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the Beijing Olympics and entered in a race longer than 10,000 meters for the first time. (28 years) was to use the event Sunday with a springboard to prepare for the 2012 Olympics in London.

“It was a lot of fun, but a little nerve-racking in the middle of the race,” she said. “I was probably a patch where I was like, ‘Ooh, I really can not sustain this? But then I got in a groove, and you miles away. I just settled in and got the rest.”

Antonio Vega of St. Paul, Minnesota, won the men half-marathon in 1:01:54.

Races started under sunny skies and a temperature of 42 degrees.
