Hot Air Balloon Crash, COUPLES made up eight of the 11 people who died when a hot air balloon went up in flames and plunged to the ground in New Zealand yesterday.

Police have released the names of the people killed when the joy flight burst into flames after hitting powerlines in Wairarapa, on the country’s northern island.

The news came as New Zealand Prime Minister expressed his sorrow to the victims’ families and friends.

“I was shocked and saddened to hear of this terrible tragedy,” Mr Key said in a statement today.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the 11 victims of this tragic event.”

Among the dead were young Wellington couple Johannes Jordann, 21, and his girlfriend Alexis Still, 19.

Also killed were partners Stephen Hopkirk, 50, and Belinda Harter, 49, of Lower Hutt; Howard Cox, 71, and his wife Diana, 63, of Wellington; and Desmond Dean, 70, and his wife Ann, 65, of Masterton.
