Hosni Mubarak & ComaHosni Mubarak & Coma, Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is in a coma, his lawyer said Sunday, but state news agency MENA quoted a hospital official as denying the report. Mubarak has been hospitalized since April and is scheduled for trial in August. “Mubarak suffered a sudden loss of blood pressure, but quickly returned to normal after the necessary medicines were given to him. His condition is stable,” MENA quoted the official saying.

Another medical source told Reuters that Mubarak, 83, occasionally slipped into a coma, but his condition was stable.

Condition Mubarak has been frequent speculation in the Egyptian media, gaining momentum before the August 3 trial.

Protesters have camped in Tahrir Square in Cairo from the Plaza on July 8 and have protested in other Egyptian cities. Their demands included calls for the military council now ruling Egypt for Mubarak to accelerate the process.

The former president, who is hospitalized in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, faces charges of abuse of power and killing protesters. More than 840 people died within 18 days of demonstrations that led to his dismissal on February 11.

“I was informed about the sudden deterioration of the health of Mubarak, and now I’m on my way to Sharm el-Sheikh. All I know so far is that the president is in a coma total,” said the lawyer Farid Mubarak -Deeb. He did not elaborate.

Mr. Deeb said in June that Mubarak was suffering from cancer, a government minister but later appeared to downplay the report.

Some Egyptians have questioned Mubarak’s disease, seeing it as a ploy by the army to avoid testing the decoration former commander of the Air Force, who ruled Egypt for 30 years.

“The news that comes once in a while about him being in bad shape is designed to gain sympathy from people, especially now with the demanding public that comes to a prison in Cairo and are facing trial in The Cairo, not in hospital, “said political analyst and activist Hassan Nafaa said.

Mubarak had been in good general health in office. He underwent gallbladder surgery in Germany in March 2010 but had appeared to make a full recovery. When in office, officials systematically dismissed talk of ill health, including reports of cancer.
