Towel DayTowel Day:May 25th is Towel Day, in memory of Douglas Adams, author of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” The book has several notable recommendations that you should take seriously when you go on holiday on foot. The first is to always carry a towel. “A towel, it says, it is useful as a massive interstellar hitchhiker can have.” “… Any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough, the slums, the struggle against terrible enemies, through to win, and still knows where his towel is clearly a man to take account. ” Towel Day, everyone is encouraged to bring a towel.

The second thing is the value of a good guide, like The Hitchhiker’s Guide. Used to be that you had to carry a printed book, but today you have favorite web sites or applications that are accessed via cell phone instead? I love my iPhone for its Maps feature, I’ve used to successfully navigate through unexplored parts of my local area on the new routes for walking.

But the best advice Douglas Adams once wrote was NOT PANIC, which was stamped on the cover of The Hitchhiker’s Guide. Whenever you are walking into uncharted territory, know where your towel, do not panic, and the use of its guide to help you overcome.

What are your bookmark or favorite guides cell phone applications to avoid panic?
