Hip Replacements Metal, A new study published in the Lancet journal suggests that metal shouldn’t be used in hip replacements due to high failure rates, especially in female patients.

More than 400,000 hip replacements were investigated and researchers discovered that metal on metal types needed more revisions than any other type of hip replacement surgery.

According to researchers tiny metal ions made of cobalt and chromium are prone to breaking off from the implant and then leaching into the blood. Following that leaching patients become prone to muscle, bone and even neurological damage.

The Guardian discovered that the British Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued new guidelines for the devices, requiring that more than 50,000 patients receive annual MRI’s alongside frequent blood checks to determine if heavy metals have leached into their bloodstream.
