Celebrity Genealogy

March 10, 2012 by · Comments Off on Celebrity Genealogy

Celebrity Genealogy, With genealogy often cited as the second most popular hobby, I’ve never understood why it’s been largely ignored on TV. We’ve got channels dedicated to everything from golf to going green, but aside from shows such as History Detectives and Antiques Roadshow that occasionally incorporate a dash of family history, genealogy has been badly neglected. Finally, that’s about to change.

Active and armchair genealogists across the country — not to mention those who can’t know enough about their favorite celebrities — will soon be treated to two shows offering a combined 11 episodes of prime time programming. Starting on February 10th and running 8:00-9:00 p.m. for four Wednesdays will be Faces of America, the latest PBS series by Henry Louis “Skip” Gates, Jr. Just two days after this series winds down, Who Do You Think You Are? (WDYTYA) will ramp up for seven episodes (Fridays, 8:00-9:00 p.m.) on NBC.

I suppose now might be an appropriate time to confess that I’m not a disinterested party as I conducted research for both of these series and had the opportunity to write the companion book, Who Do You Think You Are?: The Essential Guide to Tracing Your Family History, for one. Still, I can honestly say that my excitement would be as high even if I had had nothing to do with them. Genealogy will make for great TV for one simple reason: there’s no such thing as a boring family. This is reality television that was scripted before TV existed.

Both shows offer considerable, multicultural star power that will appeal even to those who have never looked up a census record or interviewed an older relative. The PBS line-up includes Yo-Yo Ma, Queen Noor, Malcolm Gladwell, Eva Longoria Parker, Mike Nichols, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Meryl Streep, Stephen Colbert, Louise Erdrich, Kristi Yamaguchi, Elizabeth Alexander and Mario Batali, while the NBC one includes Lisa Kudrow (who also happens to be the show’s executive producer), Susan Sarandon, Sarah Jessica Parker, Spike Lee, Brooke Shields, Emmitt Smith and Matthew Broderick.

Though both are celebrity roots shows, their formats are quite different. Both are participatory in nature with celebrities traveling to learn about their heritage, but Faces of America will feature Dr. Gates revealing many findings with his guests (much as he did in African American Lives I & II and Oprah’s Roots), while WDYTYA — a wildly popular import from the U.K. — follows celebs on journeys of self-discovery.

As a life-long and hard-core genealogist, I see this as reason to celebrate. Anyone who’s ever dabbled in family history knows how addicting it swiftly becomes, and if WDYTYA’s success in other countries is any measure, many non-genealogists will suddenly find themselves pulled in by the undertow. So now’s the time for current and budding roots-enthusiasts to start planning their weekly soirees (two shows in the week of March 1st!) to gather with friends, down some popcorn, swap tales of DNA testing Grandpa and purposely getting locked into libraries overnight, and most of all, enjoying these long overdue shows.

Hillary Clinton Plastic Surgery

Hillary Clinton Plastic Surgery, As her July 31 dream wedding approaches, Chelsea Clinton has been photographed around her downtown Manhattan neighborhood looking fitter and prettier than ever, thanks to strict dieting, exercise and plastic surgery.

Chelsea, 30, is determined to be a beautiful bride, and has been hitting the gym every day this week near her trendy Gramercy pad.

But the former First Daughter has also had some cosmetic enhancements, including a nose job and possible chin augmentation, according to Dr. Jennifer Walden, a Manhattan plastic surgeon who has not treated Clinton.

“It looks as if she has undergone a rhinoplasty procedure (nose job) which was nicely and conservatively done to remove the bump from the bridge of the nose, slim the nasal bones, as well as refine and rotate the tip which also appears to be less droopy,” Walden told MakeMeHeal.

To even out her weak chin, “she also has likely had chin augmentation, or a chin implant, placed to give her stronger jawline and more aesthetic proportions to her lower face.”

Now that she’s looking better, Chelsea is insisting that her dad, former President Bill Clinton, also overhaul his look.

“She doesn’t think I’m in shape,” Bill, 63, at the Pete Peterson Foundation‘s Fiscal Summit in Washington, D.C. Chelsea told him he’s “gotta look good” if he wants to walk her down the aisle.

Clinton recounts: “I said, ‘Well, what’s your definition?’ And she said, ‘Oh, about 15 pounds.’ So how’s Bill wedding weight-loss plan going? “I’m halfway home,” he says.

Meanwhile, the sleepy little town of Rhinebeck, N.Y., is feverishly making preparations for what many are calling “The Wedding of the Decade.”

Clintons Spare No Expense For Wedding of Their Only Child

Because there’s no monarchy in the U.S., Chelsea and her superstar political parents are the closest Americans have to royalty.

And the Clintons — who reportedly earned $109 million last year, are sparing no expense for their only child’s wedding to investment banker Marc Mezvinsky, 32.

Hillary Clinton: Russia Election

Hillary Clinton: Russia ElectionHillary Clinton: Russia Election, Issuing new warnings to two U.S. partners Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton criticized Russia for a parliamentary election she said was rigged and said election gains by Islamist parties must not set back Egypt’s push toward democracy after the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak this year.

She acknowledged the success of Islamist parties in Egyptian parliamentary voting that the U.S. has praised as fair. But many of the winners are not friendly to the United States or U.S. ally Israel, and some secular political activists in Egypt are worried that their revolution is being hijacked. Islamist parties are among the better-known and better-organized in Egypt, and while they were expected to do well in last week’s first round voting, a hardline bloc scored surprisingly large gains.

Clinton addressed head-on the fear that the hardliners will crimp human and women’s rights.

“Transitions require fair and inclusive elections, but they also demand the embrace of democratic norms and rules,” she said. “We expect all democratic actors to uphold universal human rights, including women’s rights, to allow free religious practice.”

Speaking to the election-monitoring Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Clinton repeated criticism of Russia’s weekend elections, in which Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s party won the largest share of parliament seats. Opposition politicians and election monitors say the result was inflated because of ballot-box stuffing and other vote fraud.

“Russian voters deserve a full investigation of electoral fraud and manipulation,” Clinton said. Russia’s top diplomat was present at the meeting in the Lithuanian capital, but the two did not plan to meet separately.

Hillary Clinton Wedding DressHillary Clinton Wedding Dress, WASHINGTON – As Democratic darlings and Hollywood celebrities primp, preen and puff in anticipation of marriage to Marc Mezvinsky Chelsea Clinton on Saturday, a guest knows exactly what is expected of her. For Isabelle Goetz, the French hairdresser of 39 years who has just bought a Georgetown salon Okyo, the celebration of two days is to ensure MoTB Hillary Rodham Clinton looks great.

“I have an idea in my mind,” Goetz said Clinton’s salon for the day, adding that there is no way that it disclose the details now – not even Secretary of State herself same. “No, no, no. It is too early today. We live day to day. Anyway, it will be the spur of the moment.”

Goetz, designer of Washington’s leading celebrities who also tends the tresses of the likes of Senator John Kerry and Queen Rania of Jordan, when she is in town, moved into his new salon on June 1 the shuttle and its suburbs in Virginia navy blue Vespa LX. First thing most mornings, it is parked outside the house of Clinton since one of its key claims of glory has taken the hair of Hillary to the headlines.

“Somehow with Isabelle’s hair Hillary is a false problem. She found a style that works with it when you do not focus on hair,” said Claire Shipman, senior national correspondent for the program “Good Morning America”, which is also a client.

But the barber was not always so lucky. In 2004, the committee of the presidential campaign of Kerry dodged questions about the campaign for payment and Goetz 1000 to fly to Pittsburgh, where Kerry was appearing on “Meet the Press.” Two years later, the New York Post reported Hillary Clinton in 2500 and spent two months during his campaign for Senate Goetz soft hair. (Goetz and rate starts at 250 for a cut.)

All Goetz says of her homeless clientele is that “I should be able to work anywhere, standing in the halls and sometimes with no time.” She wears a white cotton dress she bought in St. Tropez, where her husband of three years owns the buildings, while a biscuit color, leather bag slung cowgirl-style door on one hip all favorite tools – scissors, combs and brushes.

Bathing her cowgirl image, because in many respects Goetz is a pioneer in the gold rush Washington salon began in the early years. She worked in a salon in her home town of Belfort, France, where she had been cutting hair since the age of 15 years and a half. When she was 21, she decided to go to Paris Hair Salon, where she completed an application for a salon owner in Washington seeking new entrepreneurial talent to meet its growing list of clients. Goetz was one of eight French nationals recruited in 1993 by Sylvain Melloul, who was the owner of Face Express, and has all the United States under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act.

That same year Bill Clinton bounces the whole concept of celebrity hairstyles in traditional media. On an official trip to Los Angeles, traveling on Air Force One, Clinton delayed traffic at LAX airport for a haircut and 200 apron with Beverly Hills stylist Cristophe celebrities. Supported by the international advertising, Christophe has opened a branch office here. Five years later, hired Christopher Goetz, who first met Clinton when the former first lady turned to face Melloul Express help after a haircut and 275 rounds of Frederic Fekkai sparked renewed bad press.

With all the Sturm und Drang, Goetz has never lost his faith in the value of a good haircut. “Many women, when they watch the news, they inspire you by the hair and fashion,” she said.

Shipman ABC agrees. “I always feel badly for the men when they banged hair,” she said. “On television, male anchors must think if their hair makes them look too stiff and too anchor-y . For women, there has been a long history of being willing to look too big and too plastic, it’s a little more accepted. ”

For many customers, the key to success is its energy Goetz high octane.

“Isabella was this call a tomboy. She hops off his bike when it comes to me for cutting my hair, and she has great presence. I do not think I’m going to a hairdresser to celebrities. His eyes are always feminine , never cry, “said Shipman, who met with his friend Evan Goetz Ryan, a former associate White House, Hillary Clinton, and current assistant to Vice President Joe Biden.

Ryan, who has been going since 1998 Goetz, cites his own experience marriage sporting a cut Isabelle. “At the wedding of my sister, her hair brushing arrested person mid-term review to ask where I got my hair,” she recalls. “It happens all the time.”

Last year, as Goetz began to think about leaving Christopher and opening his own shop, she turned to Hillary Clinton for advice. “She thinks it is important for the country that small businesses succeed,” said Goetz. “She said any questions about my lease and gave me advice on everything.”

As for the wedding of Chelsea Clinton in Rhinebeck, NY, Goetz said she will likely be busy looking after MoTB it will not be able to tend to any of the other guests who are customers – at least that they are in the wedding party.

“Like all marriages, it is a very intense day,” she said. “The wedding day, you must be outside your comfort zone.”
