Herman Cain Endorses Newt Gingrich

Herman Cain Endorses Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain announced his support of Newt Gingrich today at a Tulsa Pizza Parlor. His endorsement came after he belted out “America the Beautiful” to a crowd of about 100 people, according to MSNBC.

“Even though I am no longer pursuing the position of president,” said Mr. Cain, who dropped out of the race for the Republican nomination in December, “I am still on a mission and that mission is to make sure that we get the right person in the White House and that person is former Speaker Newt Gingrich in order to help save America.”

Mr. Cain’s statement of support comes just one day ahead of Super Tuesday, when ten states will head to the primaries. Gingrich, who is currently vying with Rick Santorum for second place in the race for the Republican nomination after Mitt Romney, is depending on some big wins this Tuesday to stay viable.

Cain formally endorsed Gingrich in back January, citing his “bold ideas” and his patriotism as the reason for his choice. He said on CNN “Newsroom” that there were important parallels between their platforms, including the 9-9-9 tax plan.

Herman Cain, who, just like Newt Gingrich, hails from Georgia, is an important endorsement. Many of the states that will head to the primaries in March are Southern states with conservative constituencies. Both Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum are portraying themselves as the conservative alternative to Governor Romney, who hails from Massachusetts. Herman Cain, who was affiliated with the conservative Tea Party movement, has now placed his bets on Newt Gingrich.

While Cain’s conservative affiliations may be helpful to Newt Gingrich’s campaign, Herman Cain remains a controversial figure. Several female former employees accused Mr. Cain of sexual harassment last fall, saying that the Tea Party activist had made sexually suggestive acts and gestures toward them during their employment. At least two of the women settled harassment complaints against Cain, both for over $10,000, the Washington Post reports.

Mr. Gingrich trailing in the polls, and will have to battle to take on Rick Santorum, much less Mitt Romney, who leads with more than 100 delegates. This week could turn things around, however.

Mitt Romney’s campaign pointed out this weekend that Rick Santorum is likely to suffer because he failed to register delegates in a number of states that are going to the polls this Tuesday; Gingrich is depending on his appeal to conservative voters and Rick Santorum’s blunders to surge ahead with conservative voters this month. He spoke confidently this weekend, saying that he would be the only candidate that could take on Obama in the debates.

As he reminded George Stephanopoulos of ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday, there are still many weeks before Republicans will choose their nominee, and the Democrats were neck and neck into June last year.
