NASCAR has dealt with some tragedies in airplane and helicopter accidents. The Hendrick family, in particular, had been beaten by tragedy when, on October 24, 2004, the team plane fell killing several family members Hendrick. Son of Rick Hendrick, Ricky, brother John and two nieces were killed along with two employees of Hendrick, a pilot and copilot, a representative of the sponsor and an employee of Tony Stewart. In the accident, the runway was exceeded by approximately five miles. The plane crashed into a mountain, killing all aboard. The plane had been taking passengers to the Martinsville Speedway.

The Hendrick family was not the only NASCAR family touched by plane and helicopter crashes. Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison died in similar accidents. On April 1, 1993, Alan Kulwicki was among four people killed when the plane crashed it was on. He had just won the Winston Cup championship in 1992. That same year, a few months later, Davey Allison died when the helicopter he was piloting crashed. He was trying to land at Talladega Superspeedway when it crashed. He died on July 13, 1993. His father, NASCAR legend Bobby Allison, had lost another son, Clifford, less than a year earlier.

This crash is a chilling reminder of the plane crash that killed four members of the Hendrick family in 2004. Both accidents missed the runway, one for a bit because brakes failed and the other by five miles. Both crashed occurred in late October. Although the crash was heading to Martinsville Speedway, the plane crash in 2011 occurred just after the race in Martinsville, and was owned by Jimmie Johnson Racing. Johnson was the pilot who won the race at Martinsville in 2004. It is a mysterious plane crash, day of Halloween, which is sure to bring old memories to many NASCAR fans.

Kristin Watt has been a NASCAR Winston Cup, now Sprint Cup fan for as long as she remembers starting when she was a girl and her mother sat on the couch with her every Sunday during the season to watch the races. At the time, were fans of Bill Elliott and newcomer Davey Allison.
