Harley-Davidson recallHarley-Davidson recall, Harley-Davidson Inc. is recalling about 308,000 motorcycles to solve a problem switch that can cause failure of the brake lights and even the rear brakes themselves.
The company said in papers filed last week with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the brake light switch may be exposed to excessive heat from the exhaust system. The heat can cause brake lights to fail, and the problem can also cause fluid loss and loss of rear brakes, according to documents.
The problem affects Touring CVO Touring Trike and motorcycles from 2009 to 2012 model year. They were built between June 6, 2008 and September 16, 2011.

Harley says it will notify owners of the recall. Dealers will install a rear light brake switch kit for free.

The recall affects about 251,000 motorcycles in the U.S. only, and the rest elsewhere.

Harley said he noticed the problem in June 2010 when a report came a Trike motorcycle model who lost his rear brakes due to the problem. The company began to investigate, and in July 2010, which sent investigators to a dealer in Louisiana to inspect another motorcycle that was involved in an accident causing the problem.

The accident is the only Harley-Davidson is aware of. It was unclear if anyone was injured. Messages were left at the home of the Milwaukee company seeking comment.

Harley said that the documents that there have been reports over the problem that occurs from July 2010.

The company also said in a statement sent to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it expects the recall costs and 10 million 12 million and will be charged as an expense in the fourth quarter.

Shares of Harley-Davidson and rose 1.18, or 3.1 percent, to 38.78 and midday trading Monday.
