GOP Debate

GOP DebateGOP Debate, In a raucous tea party fuel debate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry showed his newly minted front-runner status: Mitt Romney attacked him on Social Security, Rick Santorum on immigration and Michele Bachmann in a controversial executive order signed as governor.

Perry, the newcomer who rose to the top of national polls when he announced his candidacy last month, moderated his tone of Social Security and otherwise, admitted a mistake. But he did essentially withdrawn their views, creating a fierce battle for the nomination against President Obama next year.

“We have not had the courage to stand and watch the Americans in the face” to say “this is a system that works,” Perry said of Social Security in the opening minutes of the debate among eight Republican candidates to office in the State of Florida fairgrounds.

He dodged a question, under pressure from Romney, if he believes that the retirement program must be returned to the States, as suggested in a book he wrote last year. Perry said it was time for “frank discussions with the Americans, rather than trying to scare the elderly as we are doing.”

“The term ‘Ponzi scheme’ is what scares the elderly,” said Romney, former governor of Massachusetts. That was a reference to a phrase used in his debut Perry national debate in California last week.
