Ice Cream SandwichIce Cream Sandwich, Samsung Electronics introduced the first smart phone running on Google’s latest Android operating system, combining the software used in tablets and smartphones, as increasing competition against Apple.

The global launch of the Nexus Galaxy begins in November and comes as competition intensifies between Samsung and Apple to gain market share in the rise of tablets and smart phone industry.

Samsung and Google introduced the high-end model at an event in Hong Kong, after delaying the launch last week as a tribute to the late founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, co. Apple is Samsung’s largest customer for microprocessors.

“This will be our strategic product for the holiday season year-end, like (Apple) iPhone 4S only entered the market,” said JK Shin, president and head of Samsung’s mobile division, communication, in a report combined with the press before a packed product launches in Hong Kong.

“It will be a close race between Apple and Samsung, mainly because I think Apple is in a category of high-end niche and Samsung, while Samsung can certainly bring that level down to the bottom in the price.”

Samsung said Monday that sales of its Galaxy Galaxy S and S II smartphones exceeded 30 million units, with the ONCE-smartphone-behind Apple expects to surpass as the largest smartphone vendor in the world in the third quarter.

By 0615 GMT, shares in Samsung were trading 0.3% versus an increase of 0.9% in the broader market.
