Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, TS-EX- Pasay City regional trial court allowed former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to visit the wake of her brother-in-law, Negros Occidental Rep. Ignacio Arroyo, in Quezon City today.

But upon receiving the order of RTC Branch 112 Judge Jesus Mupas, Arroyo’s lawyers immediately moved for the rescheduling of the visit to March 1 because the arrival of her brother-in-law’s remains from the United Kingdom was delayed.

“[Defense lawyers] filed this morning a manifestation requesting that the wake visit be reset from March 1 to 3 since according to them, Mr. Iggy’s remains will not arrive in Manila as scheduled,” Felda Domingo, the court’s spokesperson, said.

Mupas granted Arroyo’s petition to leave the Veterans Memorial Medical Center today, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., supposedly to visit the wake of her brother-in-law at the Arroyo family’s mansion in La Vista, Quezon City.

According to Domingo, the court required that the accused remain under heavy security and that the former president will not be allowed to go anywhere but their La Vista residence.

Based on the original schedule, Ignacio Arroyo’s body was supposed to arrive from London tonight via Emirates Airlines flight from Dubai but was reportedly delayed. His remains are now expected to arrive in Manila tonight.

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Thursday asked the Supreme Court (SC) to compel Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and immigration officials to allow her to leave the country for medical treatment.

The former President sought the High Tribunal’s help as she tries anew Friday to leave for Singapore to undergo medical treatment.

In a motion filed for her by lawyer Estelito P. Mendoza, Mrs. Arroyo also asked the SC to implement immediately its temporary restraining order (TRO) that lifted, in the meantime, the watch list order (WLO) issued by De Lima against her and her husband, lawyer Jose Miguel Arroyo, that allowed them to travel abroad.

She pointed out that there is no basis to hold her departure for medical treatment abroad because the TRO issued by the SC is immediately executory.

On November 15, the day the TRO was issued, Mrs. Arroyo and her husband attempted to leave for Singapore via Hongkong but they were barred from boarding the plane on orders of De Lima.

With De Lima defiance of the SC TRO, the High Tribunal is expected to order De Lima to explain why she should not be cited in contempt of court for not implementing an “immediately executor” TRO that stayed the enforcement of the watch list order (WLO) she had issued against the former First Couple during the special en banc session Friday.

“By thus continuing to enforce and implement the assailed orders (WLOs) and directing the attached agencies of the DoJ to stop petitioner GMA from leaving the country, the respondent DoJ secretary openly defied the immediately executory TRO issued by this Honorable Court in blatant disobedience of and resistance to a lawful order of this Honorable Court,” Mendoza said in his motion.

But De Lima said exhaustion of all legal remedies should not be considered as “an act of defiance.”
