Libya’s prime minister, Mahmoud Jibril Gaddafi was confirmed dead this afternoon.

Gadaffi DiedGadaffi Died, The commanders of the transitional authorities say they have captured Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi ousted.

Unconfirmed reports say Gadhafi has been murdered, and the AFP obtained a mobile image apparently showing his face covered in blood.

The reports came after the transition forces claimed control of Sirte, Gaddafi’s birthplace.

The Colonel was ousted in August after 42 years in power. The International Criminal Court has ordered his arrest.

NATO, which has carried out a bombing campaign in Libya for months, said it carried out an air strike Thursday morning that affected pro-Gaddafi two vehicles near Sirte.

The head of the National Transitional Council (CNT) Mustafa Abdul Jalil is expected to give a national television address shortly.

Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam says combatants on the ground have said that Gaddafi is dead.

Earlier, another official told Reuters NTC “is to capture this shot in both legs ..”
“It was taken by ambulance.”

AFP news agency quoted another NTC official, Mohamed Leith, who said Gaddafi in Sirte had been captured and was “seriously wounded” but still breathing.

But Abdel Majid NTC Mlegta official told Reuters that the former leader had been shot in the head and died while trying to flee.

Reuters also quoted another NTC commander, Abdul Jalil al-Hakim, who said spokesman Ibrahim Moussa Gaddafi had been captured and the chief of its armed forces, Abu Bakr Younus Jabr, had been killed.

None of the reports has been independently verified.

Caroline Hawley, the BBC in Tripoli says the boats and cars sounding their horns have been in the capital and the weapons were fired in celebration.

Earlier, the NTC in Sirte commanders – about 360 kilometers (220 miles) east of Tripoli – said the city had been liberated.

“Gaddafi No more forces,” said Col al-Abdali Yunus Reuters. “We are now pursuing their fighters who are trying to flee.”

There was no confirmation of the direction of the NTC.

However, the fighters in Sirte celebrated by firing into the air and shouting “Allah Akbar” (“God is great”).

The interim government’s forces faced stiff resistance from snipers in the city, and used heavy artillery during the offensive. Thousands of civilians have fled.

The NTC has suffered heavy casualties in the town of Bani Walid, south-east of Tripoli in recent weeks.

On Monday, the NTC said it had captured 90% of the city, including downtown.
