The service covers three days of memories and memories of Shuttlesworth, who was a close associate of Martin Luther King Jr. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder attended a memorial service on Sunday night at the Birmingham Shuttlesworth of the 16th Street Baptist Church, site of a bombing in September 1963 by members of the Ku Klux Klan that killed four little girls .

At the beginning of Fe chapel service, the Rev. Michael Moore said: “This is not just the funeral of an ordinary man. This is the celebration of the life of an incredible man,” reports The Birmingham News.

Martin Luther King III, son of the late civil rights leader, told reporters before the service, “Another giant in our society has come to be with God. While this is certainly a sad occasion, ran the race in a way fiercely unapologetic. ”

The younger King, along with several civil rights leaders – the Rev. Joseph Lowery, Andrew Young, Jesse Jackson and Ralph Abernathy’s widow – are expected to offer tributes during the service on Monday, reports the Associated Press.

Some 2,000 people are in church now, the news reports.

Shuttlesworth is to be buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Birmingham.
