Fountains Abbey And Studley Royal, TS-EX- recent cold spell has made for beautiful frosty mornings in the region with temperatures as low as minus 6.4 degrees in one North Yorkshire village.

Ravensworth was expected to get the lowest mercury reading in the area again last night.

But weather forecaster Chris Burton from Meteor Group said temperatures were due to rise today.

He said: “By Wednesday night, the temperatures will be nine or ten degrees, but Thursday and Friday morning will be frosty and the wind will pick up in the afternoon.”

After a mild winter, the harsh frosts have come as a bit of a shock to plants and animals, including the 500 deer on the grounds of Studley Royal, near Ripon, North Yorkshire.

But Jennifer Taylor, from Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey, said: “The deer are used to the bad weather – and this is nothing compared to last winter.”

The freezing temperatures have prompted Yorkshire Water to urge people not to walk on frozen reservoirs.

Geoff Lomas, catchment and recreation manager, said: “Although frozen reservoirs seem safe to walk on, the ice is very thin and the water is likely to be very deep and extremely cold.”
