Flattus Maximus

November 4, 2011 by · Comments Off on Flattus Maximus

Flattus Maximus, Long time guitarist for metal band GWAR theater, Cory Smoot Flattus aka Maximus, was found dead by members of his band on his tour bus after leaving a program in Minneapolis before heading to Canada. There is no word as to the cause of death. No one knows how old Smoot.

Maximus’s character has been portrayed in Flattus GWAR by many musicians over the years, and Cory Smoot joined the band in 2002. He has played the character as part of the band by the greatest of all previous musicians, who also took the name.

Smoot played in the War Party album, Beyond Hell, Lust in space, and the bloody pit of terror, and also assumed the role as producer of his two most recent studio albums.

GWAR was formed in 1984, following the footsteps of Alice Cooper and Kiss, quickly becoming known for its bloody antics on stage, his “in-universe” sci-fi/horror characterizations, and to emphasize his music and his presence in theatrical stage dark humor with a focus on topics considered taboo.

Urungus aka Dave Brockie Odorus released the following statement today:

It is with a deep sense of loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the death of long time guitarist and dear friend Cory Smoot, is also known to thousands of metal fans around the world as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found dead this morning in the band prepared for a border crossing.

There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this moment there is no word on agreements and the willingness of the rest of the current GWAR tour of North America, nor are details on the long-term plans.

At this time we are dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitarists in metal today. We ask our fans and the media are respectful of our request for privacy of those who have suffered this terrible loss. A full statement will come in the next days or less, in the meantime please give your thoughts and prayers for Cory, his family and all those who love him.

-Dave Brockie-
Cory Smoot loss is enormous, not only for GWAR, but to the community of metal fans as well. It will be remembered for his solid contributions to the band in 2000? S.
