Orange_Bowl_883fOrange Bowl 2010 Score:The Iowa defense stepped it up when it counted last night as the Orange Bowl 2010 score ended with the Hawkeyes on top of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets by a score of  24 – 14.  The key for Iowa going into the game was to try to shut down the Georgia Tech running game which was the key to the Yellow Jackets success all season.  Iowa was able to do just that, containing Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer and quarterback Josh Nesbitt to under 100 rushing yards combined.

The Georgia Tech ground game had led them to an 11 – 2 record this year as they averaged 307 yards rushing per game.  Last night in the 2010 Orange Bowl they were 200 yards under that average, which led to them only putting 14 points on the board, compared to their season average of 35 points per game.

While the Iowa defense was shutting down the Georgia Tech offense to just 155 total yards the Hawkeyes offense was doing their part to put enough points on the board for the victory.  The most important offensive series came late in the fourth quarter with the Iowa ahead by just three points at 17 – 14.  Getting the ball with 4:54 left in the game Iowa went on a seven play, 63 yard drive for a touchdown behind the rushing of Brandon Wegher.  Wegher carried the ball on six of the seven plays for a total of 54 yards including a 23 yard run and a 32 yard run that put him in the end zone.

The touchdown made it a two score game with less than two minutes to play, extending the Hawkeyes lead to 24 – 10.  The Georgia Tech offense wasn’t able to move the ball at all in the ensuing possession as they gained only two yards in four downs.  The Hawkeyes just ran the clock out from there as they sealed the 2010 Orange Bowl victory.  Iowa finishes out the season at 11 – 2 and Georgia Tech drops to 11 – 3.

The College Bowl schedule concludes Thursday night with Texas vs. Alabama in the Citi BCS National Championship game.  Coverage begins at 8:00 p.m. EST on ABC.
