Facebook Privacy Bug

December 8, 2011 by · Comments Off on Facebook Privacy Bug

Facebook Privacy Bug, A Facebook security bug exposed users’ private photos, including images of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, eroding trust in the company as it plans for its highly anticipated IPO. An anonymous poster on a bodybuilding site outlined step-by-step instructions on how to view and share Facebook members’ photos, even if the images were marked as private.

As a result, several websites and blogs accessed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s personal photos and published them online, including pictures of him cooking and giving out Halloween candy.

The security leak is the latest in a line of privacy- and security-related issues plaguing the Palo Alto, Calif.-based social media site, and comes at a particularly sensitive time for the company, given its approaching $10 billion initial public offering.

Facebook is preparing for its IPO, expected to occur between April and June next year, and the company needs to build trust and confidence among potential investors to position the site as a wise investment opportunity. If the social network appears to lack tight security and privacy protection, as the photo-sharing incident hints it may, its value could sink just as it gets ready to go public.
