Similac Recall, Drugmaker Abbott Laboratories said Wednesday it is recalling millions of containers of infant formula Similac-selling that may be contaminated with insect parts.

Voluntary action affects up to 5 million Similac powdered formulas of the same brand sold in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and some Caribbean countries. The company said that the products may contain a small beetle or larvae, which could cause stomach pain and digestive problems.

The recall does not affect any liquid formula or other products of the brand Abbott.

A company spokesman said Abbott found that the insects last week in one section of a manufacturing plant in Sturgis, Michigan.

“Just to close an area and began an investigation,” said Abbott Melissa Brotz. “We are in the process of resolving now.” Abbott Similac produced at several U.S. sites.

Brotz said that the company has been consulting with the Food and Drug Administration, who determined that no risk ‘immediate health risk’ of contamination.

Consumers can enter the lot number on its packaging line to determine whether they are subject to withdrawal. Products must be returned to Abbott for a full refund.

“Doing anything less than the highest quality infant formula is unacceptable to us,” Brotz said. “We will do whatever is necessary to maintain the confidence of parents in the coming weeks.”

The products are sold in plastic containers and different sizes can, including 8-ounce (227 grams), 12.4 ounces (352 grams) and 12.9 ounces (366 grams).

Similac infant formula is the best-selling nutritional products, Abbott U.S. – Which include brands like Ensure for adults – and had sales of 5,300,000,000 years past.

Abbott expects to lose 100 million and in relation to memory. However, North Chicago, Illinois, the company confirmed its earnings forecast for the third quarter and between 1.03 and 1.05 per share.

Shares of Abbott Laboratories fell 16 cents to 51.99 y.
