Emily VanCamp, The show debuted in September 2011. Wednesday’s episode, titled “Chaos,” revisited a key scene from the pilot, which showed a mysterious man shot to death on the beach in the Hamptons area of New York, outside the posh homes of key characters Victoria Grayson, a scheming socialite in played by Stowe, and her future daughter-in-law Emily Thorne.

Thorne, played by VanCamp, is a vigilante who changed her name from Amanda Clarke and took on a false identity in a bid to get revenge on those who framed her father, who was sent to prison for a t*rror*sm crime he did not commit. As part of her plan, she seduced and became engaged to Grayson’s son, Daniel, played by Joshua Bowman.

Many viewers had speculated after the pilot that it was his body that was found on the beach, in the midst of his mother’s “Fire & Ice” engagement party for him and Thorne. On Wednesday’s episode, it was revealed that the person who was shot was actually Tyler Barrol, an old college friend of Daniel Grayson.

Barrol had throughout the debut season plotted against the Grayson family in what appeared to be his own scheme for revenge. At one point, he hijacked a dinner by holding the characters at gunpoint.

On Wednesday’s episode, he kidnaps the real Emily Thorne, who is played by Margarita Levieva. She switched identities with VanCamp’s character and is known as Amanda Clarke. Barrol then faces off against the younger Grayson on the beach and reveals some unsettling facts about Thorne.

The next thing you know, bang, someone is shot. Thorne’s friend Jack Porter, played by Nick Wechsler, finds Clarke, his girlfriend, on the beach with the body. Victoria Grayson rushes to her son, but discovers it was Barrol who was shot dead. But Daniel Grayson emerges and he’s all bloody.

Stowe told TV Guide that she knew all along that on-screen son was not the person gunned down in the pilot, while the magazine quoted creator Mike Kelley as saying he “made sure Josh [Bowman] believed he was going to die all along. He didn’t learn the truth [about his character] until the table read of that episode.”

The show is set to return on February 29 with an episode titled “Scandal.” The rest of the season will now depict what is essentially a murder mystery. Police will interrogate the characters to find out who fired the fatal shots that killed Barrol. The prime suspect is Daniel Grayson.

Emily VanCamp, VENGEANCE stalks a millionaires’ playground in this prime-time soap. Emily VanCamp is a good girl gone bad. The 25-year-old Canadian spent four years as lovable doctor’s daughter Amy Abbott on Everwood. VanCamp followed that with four years as slightly troubled but sweet-natured Rebecca Harper on Brothers & Sisters.

Now she is playing vengeful – and having a ball. On the set of Revenge, VanCamp is about to unleash “the croc”, the icy stare she employs whenever her character, Emily Thorne, is contemplating payback.

VanCamp purses her lips, her eyes narrow and a stony look crosses her face. She goes from sweet to scary in seconds.

“I had this idea that Emily was like a crocodile,” she says. “She’s swimming around the Hamptons taking down people all over the place.”

Revenge is a modern-day sex-changed retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo.

Formerly Amanda Clarke, Emily returns to the millionaires’ seaside resort after 17 years.

It is there, at nine, Emily saw her father, David Clarke, framed by his neighbours and sentenced to life in prison.

Emily plays sweet and friendly but she is consumed by rage, loss and betrayal. She has only one thing on her mind – vengeance.

She will use all means necessary to get back at her sworn enemies, including glamorous matriarch Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) and husband Conrad (Henry Czerny).
