Electronic Medical RecordsElectronic Medical Records, Aetna Inc. (AET), the third health insurer in the U.S., said that 9 million customers is easier to download electronic versions of health records of a company’s Web site as part of a government effort to promote data online.

The insurer expects next year to give its members the ability to send personal health records directly to physicians and other providers through a secure system, said Brian Kelly, head of IT and the company’s strategic alignment Hartford, Connecticut.

Aetna, the purchaser of Medicity health provider for data and 500 million last year, believes that the download function, a way of promoting the welfare of customers, Kelly said. The application provides suggestions on techniques for managing diseases like diabetes and hypertension.

“We will look at your data and make suggestions,” said Kelly. “For example,” we have not received your flu vaccine this year, ‘or,’ you have diabetes, and we have protein in urine. ”

The service expands on the use of the insurer of personal health records in a PDF form, which allows consumers to securely download the personal health information in a text file format that can be shared easily with providers or family members.

The service is part of the initiative blue button in the Obama administration, a set of privacy practices and security designed by the Veterans Administration and the Department of Defense to promote the use of personal health data online. Employers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT), Bentonville, Ark., have signed the program.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH), the largest insurer by sales, based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, plans to offer similar access to records of the seven million members in early 2012, said Matt Stearns, a spokesman.
