Ekaterina Makarova

Ekaterina Makarova, It was also the day when Martina Navratilova, the greatest champion that women’s tennis has known, called for an overhaul of the whole rankings system. Navratilova’s was a timely suggestion, for in the aftermath of this shock defeat, the balance of power in the women’s game clearly needs readdressing.

Judging by Monday’s result, it seems that the younger generation are finally beginning to get over their awe at Williams’s haughty bearing and long list of titles.

“I really thought that I could beat her,” said Makarova, the world No 56.

But who will inherit the queen’s mantle? That has been the question for the last couple of years, ever since Williams began to drift away from regular competition. It has still to receive a satisfactory answer.

Although Caroline Wozniacki has been the official No 1 since October 2010, she has not yet shown herself to be a convincing contender for a Grand Slam title.
