Red Bull Flugtag Philadelphia, Monday and industrial electrician Chris Barton at his station near New Castle where they design and manufacture custom-built electrical panels.

The day is done. His employees have left. And now he’s wearing a baby bonnet, a bib and a diaper with his thumb in his mouth to shout, “Mommy Mommy!”

Fortunately, there is no need to call in mental health professionals. He’s just practicing for one of the craziest things he has ever done: to try a custom-built flying machine flying over the Delaware River near Camden, NJ, for tens of thousands of spectators.

It’s all in the name of fun as the Red Bull Flugtag, which means “flight day” in German, brings the adventure game to Philadelphia for the first time.

The Red Bull Flugtag in Vienna was founded in 1991 by Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz fellow, an Austrian. It has since held more than 80 times in over 35 cities.

Two weeks ago, the Flugtag in Long Beach, California, drew a crowd of 105,000. This weekend event will be a bit like a carnival, with food and drink suppliers dot the shore.

At each event, several teams start their homemade creation of a driveway 30 feet above the water. The goal is to fly, glide or minimize the judges, which include remote teams to impress, the craftsmanship of their rig and show the team.

Barton’s team, called the Stork Dork, no problems with the show part. They have planned an opening dance to the song “That’s the Way (I Like It)” by KC and the Sunshine Band before Metallica’s “Whiplash” takes the four other guys on the team Barton’s push it on top of homemade stork 100 meter before he sails over the edge of the driveway on (and eventually) River.

“It will be a sensation. My heart will be,” said Barton, 39, who head the only team from Delaware who participate in the event. “If I were in the cockpit and they started pushing me, I’ll probably cry, “Get me down!”

Barton’s teammates, a quirky group of mostly middle-aged men who know each other, either by his friends, colleagues or family members will wear multicolored beanie propeller hats and yellow stockings with cardboard wings attached around their arms covered with real feathers. The team – Barton, Earl Carter, Bud Pacific, Jim Cobb and Rick Ramsey – metalworkers and even includes a registered nurse employed at Wilmington Hospital.

The team, which is about 300 man-hours spent on the project, expects more than 100 friends and family to travel north to watch the spectacle. They are spreading the word through their Facebook page – Search “Dork Stork” to find. And team supporters, the text of the Stork Team Dork song, Team12, “to RBULL (72 855) between 11 hours and 15:30 today, Saturday for the People’s Choice Award Craft.
