Dr Mahathir MohamadDr Mahathir Mohamad, Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad today laughed off claims made by lawmakers in Sabah and Sarawak for a second deputy prime minister, saying he must be sincere in serving the voters and not to prosecute senior officials in government.

The idea was raised by the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) president Bernard Dompok in the Barisan Nasional based Sabah (BN) component party triennial conference delegates in Kota Kinabalu last month.

Mahathir said that if the demand was met, politicians in Sabah and Sarawak would have to consider the demands of their counterparts on the mainland.

“Why Sabah and Sarawak? What about other states? I think Kedah also wants a deputy prime minister,” the Kedah-born joke.

“Everyone wants a job. There must be an MCA member, a deputy MIC, Gerakan deputy. And if Pakat Rakyat wins, everybody wants to be prime minister,” he said.

Mahathir calls for Sabah and Sarawak lawmakers to focus on doing their job to serve the people instead if they were sincere in carrying out his duties as government leaders.

“Whether that is attached (prime minister) or not, if you can serve the people, that’s fine. If you do not serve people, you’ll suffer the fate of (Muammar) Gaddafi,” he said.

The idea of ??publishing a second deputy prime minister has to be laid by the leaders in Sabah and Sarawak, was intended to recognize the importance of the two states.

The motion was seconded by Parti Rakyat Sarawak the (PRS), President Dr. James Masing and with the support of the opposition, Sarawak PKR vice-president, See Chee How.

The opposition leader said the idea could benefit the people of the two states.

The leaders of the two states have longed complained about the negligence of Putrajaya, leading to defections of several of his political and Barisan Nasional component parties (BN).

Complaints have also led to growing support for the opposition.

Pakat had doubled their seats in the Sarawak state election just concluded, finishing with the idea that Sabah and Sarawak will remain as “vote banks” of the ruling coalition.
