Discovery Gold Rush, It can not be gold in Alaska, Oregon, but the men hunting in the last season of “gold fever” does not exactly strike pay dirt.  And judging by the first episode of season 2 – which premieres Friday night on the Discovery – the search can not be easier.

The first season premiered in December 2010. Viewers met Todd Hoffman and his father, Jack Hoffman, who live in sand, where they own and operate the airport in river sand. As the spectacle frame, the Hoffmans and a handful of his friends were suffering tough economic times and went to Alaska in search of gold as the old adventure reaction to the recession.

The show was an instant hit for the discovery, the episodes were seen by an average of 3 million viewers, a good number for Friday, a night of low ratings.

While Jack Hoffman had mined gold in Alaska 25 years ago, the Oregon team problems with his inexperience and resisted criticism.

Some viewers objected to what appeared to be careless treatment of the environment. But government regulators Alaska Hoffman said the crew had won the necessary permits and generally were not in violation of the policies of land use.

At the end of Season 1, the team had spent Hoffman and 250,000 in the search, but found only $ 20,000 in gold and before the winter in Alaska forced to stop operations.

As a special episode tonight, “off-season,” said Todd Hoffman spent the first half of this year, making arrangements to return to Alaska.

In the first episode of the new season, which continues the special, Todd, Jack and his crew chief back to Porcupine Creek, only to find a rude awakening.

Among the crew is David Turin, which appeared in several episodes last season as a consultant to the miners. This year, Turin joins the crew time complete.

With the end of the Alaska mining season, Turin is back in the sand, working in his family business. We talked about the challenges of taking time off to go to Alaska and the desire for adventure that brought him there. Questions and answers have been edited for clarity and length.

Q: How did you get involved with the show?

R: I knew Todd from the church, and have developed a good friendship over the years. And last year, with my experience in mining, Todd asked me for advice. (Works in Turin Turin Jim & Sons, Inc. in the sand, a family business that supplies paving materials.) That helped him last year when they were in Alaska. This year, in January, I proposed to join the crew time to complete.

Q: What do you think?

A: My first reaction was, I wanted to go (to Alaska), it is an adventure. He awoke in me some things that had sort of gone dormant. I’ma guy who likes a challenge. But what bothered me was the temptations are so mundane. I was afraid to get caught up in fame and fortune. So I talked to my wife. I have been married for 30 years to my high school sweetheart. After much prayer and blessing of my wife, I told Todd he would talk to my brothers (in the family business). They were receptive to the idea, but through many conversations, it was agreed to let me go.

Q: How long were you out?

R: I was in Alaska from May to September. I went around the first three weeks to configure, install a septic system, water system, this is with permissions. We hired an expert there to help us with that. We had to build infrastructure to handle seven miners, and some of their families, and then the film crew.

Q: What was your wife feels that going to Alaska for five months?

A: My wife, Shelly, is a nurse, and she worked as a volunteer at a clinic in Rockwood. She refused to continue to Alaska and help me with my dream. We bought a small mobile home, and fixed breakfast for all miners, five days a week. She is a lady.

Q: Do I pay for his work on the show?

A: I was paid to participate. It was a huge amount.

Q: What did you do after you leave the experience?

A: I’m pretty sure, and I think I’m pretty good at my job. So I go there, and what scared me was my own lack of knowledge and inexpertise. I thought I was in my head. But we overcame. The interesting thing about this show is that we feel gives us a platform to help motivate people to help themselves. It was amazing, and I would not trade for anything.
