George SteinbrennerNY Daily News:(New York Daily News) — Love him or hate him, George Steinbrenner, the owner is probably most dynamic in sports history. The chief died early Tuesday at age 80, leaving behind a legacy of grandstanding, tournaments and charity. The Daily News looks back on his career:

July 4, 1930: George Michael Steinbrenner III was born in Rocky River, Ohio, son of Henry G. Steinbrenner Haley II and Rita.

1944: Steinbrenner enters the Culver Military Academy and graduated from high school four years later.

1952: Receives a BA in English Literature from Williams College, where he is a top hurdler on the track also, sports editor of the student newspaper, among other extracurricular activities.

1952: Steinbrenner, a high hurdler, competes in the famous Penn Relays.

1955: Steinbrenner begins a two-year term as an assistant football coach at the university.

May 12, 1956: Marries Elizabeth Joan Ziege in Columbus, Ohio.

1956: Steinbrenner begins a period of two years as an assistant football at Purdue.
