Costa Concordia Cruise Ship

Costa Concordia Cruise Ship, It’s a disturbing sight: a massive, half-submerged cruise ship, dashed against rocks on an island off the Tuscan coast of Italy. But as the gruesome job of searching for missing victims of the Costa Concordia tragedy winds down in the coming days, a daunting task awaits salvage workers poised to deal with the wrecked hulk itself. It’s a task that may take months before the scene changes much.

Workers have begun placing booms around the ship to prevent oil spills as crews wait for the OK to start removing 2,400 tons of fuel and oil from the double-hulled vessel, which ran aground last week on the island of Giglio. The removal is estimated to take three to four weeks. Engineers, meanwhile, will gauge the structural damage to the $450-million ship. Next comes the decision on whether to repair and re-float it or cut it into pieces for parts and materials.

The work will be done by salvage companies that will inspect and assess the damage and make recommendations on how to proceed. But the job will be unusual for them: Such companies typically rescue container ships or oil tankers that run aground. Here, they must deal with a 951-foot-long, 17-deck cruise ship with 1,500 cabins.

“This one is quite difficult because you have all these compartments in the ship, which is top-heavy to begin with,” said Frances Leckey, operations director for Resolve Marine Group, a Florida company that salvages wrecked ships. “This is not common at all.”

Operators of the cruise ship said no decision will be made on whether the Costa Concordia can be repaired until all the missing passengers and crew members are recovered and workers remove the ship’s fuel and oil to prevent a leak.

Authorities in Italy have accused the ship’s captain of making a reckless maneuver that brought the cruise liner so close to shore that rocks tore holes in the side of the hull.

Of the 4,200 people aboard the ship, at least 11 were killed and 21 were still missing. Search efforts by divers continued Thursday.

“Costa’s main focus remains on the search and rescue operation and on getting guests and crew home safely,” said a spokesman for Costa Cruises, which operated the ship, carrying 4,200 people.

The spokesman said the cruise line company has not yet determined the cost of the rescue or future repair work. Costa Cruises’ parent company, Miami-basedCarnival Corp., has said it expects to lose nearly $100 million from the loss of the use of the ship for at least 10 months. Carnival announced Thursday that in response to the accident it will review all of its safety and emergency response procedures among the 10 subsidiary cruise companies it operates.

Concordia Cruise ShipConcordia Cruise Ship, Italian Environment Minister Corrado Clini says he will declare a state of emergency over the cruise liner Costa Concordia capsized off Italy’s west coast, which would free up state funds to help prevent an environmental disaster.
Clini said some liquid material had started to leak from the ship, but it was unclear if it was fuel. He said protective barriers were being put in place.

“Monitoring is continuing to take the decisions aimed at avoiding environmental risks,” Clini told a news conference.

Italian rescue officials say a passenger’s body has been found in the wreckage of the Costa Concordia, raising to six the number of confirmed dead in the disaster. Sixteen people remain unaccounted-for.

Fire official Luca Cari told state radio that the victim was a man, found in a corridor in the part of the ship that was still above water. He said the victim was wearing the orange-coloured life vest of passengers.

The number of unaccounted-for was increased because two Sicilian women, originally listed among the evacuated, have not contacted relatives. Cari said a search of all the ship, including a divers’ inspection of the submerged areas, continues, but the sea is becoming rough.

Still, there were glimmers of hope: The rescue of three survivors – a young South Korean couple on their honeymoon and a crew member brought to shore in a dramatic airlift some 36 hours after the grounding late Friday.

Meanwhile, attention focused on the captain, who was spotted by Coast Guard officials and passengers allegedly fleeing the scene even as the chaotic and terrifying evacuation was under way.

The ship’s Italian owner, a subsidiary of Carnival Cruise lines, issued a statement early today (NZ time) saying there appeared to be “significant human error” on the part of the captain, Francesco Schettino, “which resulted in these grave consequences.”

Authorities were holding Schettino for suspected manslaughter and a prosecutor confirmed overnight (NZ time) they were also investigating allegations the captain abandoned the stricken liner before all the passengers had escaped. According to the Italian navigation code, a captain who abandons a ship in danger can face up to 12 years in prison.

A French couple who boarded the Concordia in Marseille, Ophelie Gondelle and David Du Pays, told the Associated Press they saw the captain in a lifeboat, covered by a blanket, well before all the passengers were off the ship.

Costa Concordia, The South Korean couple were rescued from the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia early on Sunday

Three survivors have been found on the stricken cruise ship Costa Concordia, more than 24 hours after it ran aground off the Italian coast.

Rescuers have extricated a crew member, hours after a honeymooning South Korean couple were rescued.

Three people are so far confirmed dead and about 40 are unaccounted for.

The captain of the Costa Concordia has been arrested on suspicion of multiple homicide. Prosecutors say he left the ship before evacuation was complete.

First officer Ciro Ambrosio has also been detained.

The ship’s operator, Costa Crociere, said the vessel had been following its regular course when it hit a submerged rock.

In a TV interview, ship’s captain Francesco Schettino said the rock was not marked on any maritime charts.

Police are investigating why the accident happened in calm conditions.

The South Korean couple were located after rescuers heard voices from a cabin two decks down on the half-submerged ship late on Saturday. They were reached a few hours later.

The couple, both 29 years old, were both in good health when they were brought ashore.

A third survivor has now been located and has been airlifted from the wreck. Officials say he is a senior Italian member of the crew. They believe he has a serious injury to his leg.

Two French passengers and a Peruvian crew member died, and another 30 people were injured, two seriously.

Divers are continuing to search the ship, which is lying on its side near the Tuscan island of Giglio.

Costa Concordia Cruise Line

Costa Concordia Cruise Line, Divers searched the submerged part of a luxury cruise liner that went aground off Italy’s coast in case any of 70 people unaccounted for might be trapped inside, a coast guard official said Saturday, as passengers described a delayed and terrifying evacuation.

Three bodies were recovered from the sea after the Costa Concordia ran aground off the tiny island of Giglio near the coast of Tuscany late Friday, tearing a 160-foot (50-meter) gash in its hull and sending in a rush of water.

One of the victims was a Peruvian crew member, a diplomat from the South American country said, adding that a Peruvian woman was also missing. The ANSA new agency identified the other two fatalities as French passengers, but didn’t cite a source.

Passengers described a scene reminiscent of “Titanic”, saying they escaped the ship by crawling along upended hallways, desperately trying to reach safety as the lights went out and plates and glasses crashed. Helicopters whisked some survivors to safety, others were rescued by private boats in the area, and witnesses said some people jumped from the ship into the dark, cold sea.

The ship was lying virtually flat off Giglio’s coast, its starboard side submerged in the water and the huge gash showing clearly on its upturned hull.

Passengers complained the crew failed to give instructions on how to evacuate and once the emergency became clear, delayed lowering the lifeboats until the ship was listing too heavily for many of them to be released.

Carnival Corp., which owns the cruise line that the ship belongs to, didn’t address the allegations in a statement it issued.
