Paul Harris suffered either a cardiac complication or stroke (reports are conflicting, but reports suggest his family believes it was a heart attack) on January 29 while he was reportedly unloading crabs from his boat Cornelia Marie. He was treated in an Alaska hospital and apparently purposely sedated for a few days, before waking and appearing to make progress while interacting with his family.

Paul Harris rose to fame after starring in the Discovery Channel series Deadliest Catch, which depicted the crabbing industry in Alaska. In its five seasons, the show had grown into Discovery’s most popular, and our friends at PopEater report that Paul Harris was such a central figure on the show because he embodied a timeless, tough male character who never backed down from the elements. Discovery Channel senior vice president Elizabeth Hillman says in a statement, “Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him.” Harris had been working on fishing boats since he was seven years old, and fishing is a Harris family business.

Paul Harris’ sons Jake and Josh have responded to their father’s death in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad, Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.”

LimeLife sends its best to Paul Harris’ family and members of the Deadliest Catch crew. Another sad celebrity tragedy saw a development in its story yesterday when Nancy Kerrigan’s father’s death was ruled a homicide. Get the confict-ridden story here.

Whether or not you knew Phil Harris, you’ll see how well-loved he was in this clip (as well as how careful he had to be for his health) from the Deadliest Catch’s most recent season.
