College Football Polls

December 4, 2011 by · Comments Off on College Football Polls

College Football Polls, And with that, the college football regular season is over. It’s a sad day, in some ways, but exciting in others. Where once we thought a rematch in the BCS Championship was inevitable, now we’re not so sure. It all comes down to this week’s college football rankings, which will be released throughout the day on Sunday.

To be clear, the top-two probably won’t change in the human polls. But it doesn’t matter whether the rankings change; the number behind the rankings will be key on Sunday. Yes, LSU will be the unquestioned No. 1, but if Oklahoma is able to steal a few votes and close part of the gap to Alabama, things could get interesting when the BCS rankings are released.

How the Harris and Coaches Polls shake out, all the way down to single votes, will be crucial on Sunday when deciding whether Alabama or Oklahoma State will get a shot at LSU. And we’ll start to get a better idea of what could happen when the BCS rankings are released in the evening as the poll results are made public on Sunday morning.

Here’s a look at the games that mattered this week.

No. 1 LSU 42, No. 14 Georgia 10. At least there’s no debate about this one. The Honey Badger still does amazing things and LSU is still the easy No. 1 team in the country.

No. 3 Oklahoma State 44, No. 10 Oklahoma 10. The Cowboys did exactly what they needed to do on Saturday evening. A convincing win, perhaps one that would sway a couple voters, was the order of the day, and Oklahoma State did just that. Now everything gets a lot more interesting.

No. 20 Clemson 38, No. 5 Virginia Tech 10. Many wondered whether the Hokies were for real heading into the ACC Championship and Clemson hit the gas to leave Virginia Tech in the dust in the second half. The big loss could reverberate in the rankings on Sunday.

Poll Methodology and Process

The 2011 Harris Interactive College Football Poll is comprised of former players, coaches, administrators and current and former members of the media who have committed to submit rankings for the top 25 college football teams each week. These panelists were randomly selected from among more than 300 nominations submitted by the 11 Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) offices and the independent schools. The panel has been designed to be a statistically valid representation of all 11 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences and independent institutions. Today, 115 poll participants submitted their top 25 college football team rankings. Harris Interactive applies a standard statistical practice that allows it to identify potential instability, error or bias associated with unusual ranking patterns. Those rankings that are identified through the analysis are verified to ensure that each panelist’s intent is accurately reflected.

This week’s rankings and other information about the poll can be found at www.harrisinteractive.com/bcspoll and www.bcsfootball.org .

College Football Polls

College Football Polls, Remember all the talk about all the undefeated teams and how they would be chaos, when they did through the season undefeated? Seems to happen every year. Six or seven weeks, we think we know everything, but at a time when everything goes down the drain. Saturday was one of those moments.

The chaos came late, with a great event upset in a night game and the other taking place after a delay of lightning, to the conclusion pushing into the night. Wisconsin was the first to fall, and did so in dramatic fashion as Michigan State became a drill tip of Ave Maria for the win. Just hours later, it was the turn No. 3 Oklahoma, Texas Tech with hanging for his life in the three-point victory. As everyone predicted.

What is this? Wait Oklahoma and Wisconsin down, obviously. But the teams jump in the standings? Boise State seems likely get the short end of stick, with Stanford and Clemson taking advantage of the miscues the top of the standings.

Here’s a look at the scores that mattered on Saturday.

No. 1 LSU 45, Auburn 10. Even without their suspended headlines, LSU remained dominant again. The Tigers continue to search every part of his No. 1 ranking.

No. Alabama February 37, Tennessee 6. Of course, Alabama is on a collision course with LSU, to make a hell of a game in two weeks. Two dominant defenses and talented team in a battle for the No. 1? You will not find many people do not expect this.

Texas Tech 41, No. 3 Oklahoma 38. So much for that. Oklahoma shot in the foot, Texas Tech played out of his mind and the Sooners BCS Championship went down the drain, while half of the United States was sleeping. Good morning!

No. 4 Oklahoma State 45, Missouri 24. Justin Blackmon left early for precautionary reasons (concussion, according to reports), but no matter. Oklahoma State is still out of racing, but fun Bedlam fight we were all waiting seems a little less intriguing right now.

No. 5 Boise State 37, Air Force 26. Yes, the Air Force is difficult to prepare a duel. And yes, Boise State has survived at home. But this was far from being a compelling and the Broncos win style points.

No. 16 Michigan State 37, No. 6 Wisconsin 31. Nothing to say. Just watch over and over.

No. July 59 Clemson, North Carolina 38. We’re just going to have to face the reality of being a team Clemson in the top five.

No. 8 Stanford 65, Washington 21. At this point, it appears that Oregon will be tested only in a great duel Stanford Pac-12 North. This was supposed to test for the Cardinal. Instead, it was a clinic as the Huskies dismantled Stanford.

No. 9 Arkansas 29, Ole Miss 24. Again, no style points here. Arkansas had to meet, but managed to gain the victory. It was not pleasant by any means, however.

No. 10 Oregon 45, Colorado 2. Oregon had this in the bag before the break and respite. So close to a shutout!

No. 11 Kansas State 59, Kansas 21. And now we have to deal with Kansas State in the top-10. College football is a scary place.

No. 12 Virginia Tech 30, Boston College 14. This was a game at halftime and even led Boston College! So much for that.

No. 13 Nebraska 41, Minnesota 13. At least the game was entertaining. No, no, because of excellent game or performance, Minnesota is a ball of comic errors.

Syracuse 49, No. 14 West Virginia 23. Almost forgot this, but what in the world, Holga? The Big East is on fire, guys.

No. 17 Texas A & M 33, Iowa State 17. Steele was benched Jantz, who is the greatest tragedy in all this.

No. 19, Houston 63, Marshall 28. I would love to see Keenum case and Pumas in a BCS game just for the balls to the wall, throw it all around the offensive explosion.

No. 21 Penn State 34, Northwestern 24. Where in the hell did this crime is Penn State? And where is the defense? Whose computer is this?

Miami 24, No. 22 Georgia Tech. It was fun while it lasted, Yellowjackets.

Purdue 21, No. 23 Illinois 14. It was fun while it lasted, Zook.

And here’s a look at the polls. The preview of BCS rankings will be for long. This is what the BCS was like last week.
