Coast Guard DayCoast Guard Day, Coast Guard Day is celebrated throughout the country on Thursday. The mark 221st anniversary celebration of the agency.

On Thursday, 40 000 Coast Guard service members may observe the anniversary by staying alert at their posts, according to The News-Herald.

Sergeant David K. Phillips, who was station commander of Fairport Harbor for three years, told The News-Herald, “We have a rare and unique opportunity in the Coast Guard to make a difference by saving lives, as well as being a springboard for enforcement. In fact, many of our staff goes to law enforcement careers. ”

Many members of the Coast Guard throughout the country reside in the services sector, which is actually under the direction of the Department of Homeland Security instead of the Department of Defense.

U.S. Coast Guard knows it today has evolved since the late 20th century. In 1915, the merger of two related groups noted that the increase in the number of servicemembers in the Coast Guard – the National Revenue Service Cutter Service and the U.S. Life Saving. Then in the 1930’s, the body was expanded to include the lighthouse service. However, the Coast Guard today is smaller than the NYPD.
