Ernie Davis Cause Of Death

March 9, 2012 by · Comments Off on Ernie Davis Cause Of Death

Ernie Davis Cause Of Death, Ernest “Ernie” Davis (December 14, 1939 – May 18, 1963) was an American football running back and the first African-American athlete to win the Heisman Trophy. Wearing number 44, Davis competed collegiately for Syracuse University before being drafted by the Washington Redskins, then almost immediately traded to the Cleveland Browns in December 1961.

However, he would never play a professional game, as he was diagnosed with leukemia in 1962. He is the subject of the 2008 Universal Pictures movie biography The Express, based on the non-fiction book Ernie Davis: The Elmira Express, by Robert C. Gallagher.

In the summer of 1962, Davis was diagnosed with acute monocytic leukemia and began receiving medical treatment. The disease was incurable and he died in Cleveland Lakeside Hospital May 18, 1963, at the age of 23.

Both the House and the Senate of the United States Congress eulogized Davis, and a wake was held at The Neighborhood House in Elmira, New York, where more than 10,000 mourners paid their respects. During the funeral, a message was received from President Kennedy, and was read aloud to all of the people attending the service. Davis is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, Chemung County, New York, in the same cemetery in which Mark Twain is buried.

His commemorative statue stands in front of Ernie Davis Middle School, which Davis attended as Elmira Free Academy during his high school years. The building was named in his honor after its conversion to a middle school. Another statue of Davis stands on the campus of Syracuse University, near the steps of Hendricks Chapel and the Quad where pre-game pep rallies are held. He was elected in the Fall of 2008, coinciding with the premiere of The Express and the beginning of construction of Ernie Davis Hall, a dorm on the Syracuse campus. Syracuse later named The field at the Carrier Dome Ernie Davis Legends Field.

Peyton Hillis

Peyton Hillis, Coming off a bye week, the Cleveland Browns on all cylinders dominated New England Patriots, a team that entered the game with the best record in the NFL. This was not a fluke victory by any stretch of the imagination.

On offense, Peyton Hillis could not be stopped, he ran a career-high 184 yards on 29 touches for 2 touchdowns. That includes a nice 35-yard blast that had to end the Patriots in the fourth quarter, forcing New England to make backup Brian Hoyer in the game, and they were losing so bad. Colt McCoy threw the ball only 19 times, but completed 75% of his passes. Congratulations Brian Daboll – the Browns finally had a perfect offensive game, with emphasis on the race, then have a clutch mixed in a few steps today, changed my mind – McCoy is the starting quarterback the rest of the season.

As for the Patriots offense, Tom Brady seemed to be confused with the defense is our team was pulling it. Their receivers struggled to catch the ball, at times, and Rob Grankowski had a costly fumble just before halftime. The Patriots converted just 11.3 of their third downs (27%), which I guess is a low season for them.

The Browns did not stop the creativity and risk taking in this game. They are mixed on kickoffs to keep the ball away from Brandon Tate, and one of those attempts resulted in an accidental kick game recovery. On offense, a version of “fumblerooski” has been executed, with Chansi Stuckey to take on a score. The Browns also converted a fourth and short in its own territory in the first quarter.

In the last two games have been incredible, and not think you can beat the New York Jets next week now? Cleveland could even be promoted taking into account how the Jets to lose to the Lions?

Antonio Gates

Antonio Gates, San Diego tight end Antonio Gates is active and is expected to start against New England. He missed practice all week with a foot injury suffered in San Luis.

The Chargers have Gates, even if not at full capacity.

San Diego starting receivers Malcolm Floyd and Legedu Naanee is inactive with a hamstring injury. Buster Davis and Patrick Crayton will start for the Chargers.

Naanee appears as the third quarterback and was able only if the starting quarterback Philip Rivers and backup Billy Volek injured. The team cut No. 3 quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan to make room for kicker Kris Brown.

It will start a game or two, while kicker Nate Kaeding is out with a groin injury.

In other news from the AFC West and related notes:

Kansas City Chiefs receiver Verran Tucker promoted from the practice squad. He is a rookie free agent. To accommodate Tucker, Kansas City cut undrafted rookie Jeremy Horne. He was a star of the preseason, not having an impact on the regular season. Horne could end the practice squad of the Chiefs.

The San Francisco Chronicle has an interesting look at the slow start No. 8 overall pick Rolando McClain. It’s early, but McClain has not made many big plays.

Apparently, the former czar of Kansas City, Carl Peterson has no future with the Dolphins. That marriage has been speculated about Peterson was at the door by the heads of nearly two years ago.

Montario Hardesty

Montario Hardesty, However, with all the football games that were on Thursday night, I think anyone can be a little confused as to what day it is. The Browns wrapped up the preseason with a 13-10 victory over the Chicago Bears and the Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Marshall Thundering Herd is 45-7 to start the search for a BCS National Championship. If you ask me last night felt more like a Saturday or Sunday instead of Thursday. Now, with that of the way, what I can share my ideas on the two last nights game.

From Ohio State started in the first place, I’ll start with my opinion on the Buckeyes. He had a concern kickoff went down in “The Shoe,” which the Buckeyes come to play hard and especially Marshall who plays next to Ohio State on the schedule, the Hurricanes of Miami. Well, I’m delighted that the scarlet and gray blurs the concerns of my mind very quickly. The Buckeyes forced a Marshall fumble on the kickoff and turned it into seven points, and scored another touchdown in the second is the possession and never looked back in the 45-7 defeat.

The only thing that worried me was the exercise Buckeyes special teams have allowed a field goal attempt blocked and returned for touchdown, for Marshall the only points of the game. Other than that, it was clear to me that Jim Tressel his boys had focused on this game and not face the Hurricanes. Terrelle Pryor seemed that everyone Heisman Trophy candidate in the national media predicted to be in recent weeks. Pryor was 17 of 25 for 247 yards and three touchdowns and no turnovers. Pryor was very impressive to get each of their receptors involved in the game, completed passes to eight different receivers. I know it’s only the beginning of the season, but in my mind Terrelle Pryor leads the race for the Heisman Trophy.

A couple of the team captains Buckeyes were impressive too. Brandon Saine ran for 103 yards on only nine carries and scored two touchdowns, and the Dane Sanzenbacher caught three passes for 113 yards including a 65-yard bomb from Pryor. On defense, the silver bullets Storm shutout of the herd and even add their own points on the scoreboard with the return of Brian Rolle’s interception 30 yards for a touchdown. Everything is equal to a solid victory season opener. Now “Buckeye Nation” is officially under the watch of “Hurricane” with the University of Miami who come to “The Shoe” next week.

Now about the Browns. With this being the preseason game of the year, the owners would see little or no action, so this was a game for players who are on the bubble to make the 53-man roster, or possibly could be an audition for another team will come later. There were two positions held in my eye throughout the game, the quarterback and running back.

Obviously, the tongue lashing Colt McCoy Eric Mangini gave the Detroit end of the game go in one ear and out the other. McCoy was impressive even against reserves in the defense of the Bears. With the exception of the first fumble, McCoy played his way into the list. Colt was a perfect 13 of 13 for 131 yards. As for Brett Ratliff, I think his days, as a Cleveland Brown will end on Saturday.

The battle in the backfield will be very interesting to say the least. It was great to see Montaria Hardesty get some game action and find the end zone in the process, however, also saw a recurring theme with the rookie from Tennessee, another injury. Hardesty injured his left knee a few minutes after scoring his first career touchdown. Montaria had just returned to practice after injuring his right knee during training camp rookies. With injuries Hardesty, meant more fit, both for James Davis and Chris Jennings that were clearly on the bubble comes into play. With Jerome Harrison, Lawrence Vickers Peyton Hillis and all locks to be on the team, it is clear that Eric Mangini was just going to have room for one more row on the active roster. Hardesty is assumed that considering the price paid for the Browns to advance the project to select Montaria, but now who knows. I credit James Davis, was clear to me that Davis knew he had to have a good game and no matter what he did. If Hardesty is going to miss much time, James Davis could only have made the list.

Defensively, I thought the Browns played well. I think there may be a couple of surprises on that side of the ball on who stays and who is not, after cuts are announced. And finally, cannot forget Phil Dawson. He won the game on the final play of the game with a field goal from 36 yards as time expired, as the Green Bay game. Dawson also tried a field goal from 58 yards to end the first half. While the intent was
