Christmas Tree Farms

Christmas Tree Farms, Friday was opening day for Christmas tree farms across North Carolina, and farm owners said people are already heading out to pick out the perfect tree.

“Starting this year, we’re coming (to the tree farm) for Thanksgiving. And then, (we’ll) get the tree today (Friday), go home to decorate the tree and have Christmas with my family tomorrow (Saturday),” customer Beth Pendley said.

Picking out a tree together with the entire family is a tradition that Rail Fence Farm owner Kenneth Vanhoy said he loves to see.

“We have some who come out and take the football and stay for a good while. Some people even bring picnics. It’s a fun time of year,” Vanhoy said.

Vanhoy’s farm has been growing Christmas trees for 44 years, and despite family budgets being tight the past few years, Vanhoy said he hasn’t seen a dip in business.

“Then again, more people are thinking local and trying to stay closer, so I think (that’s why) our business has really picked up,” Vanhoy said.

North Carolina is one of the top producers of Christmas trees in the nation, and Vanhoy said his farm will sell about 200 trees in the next month.

Prices on real trees range, and at Rail Fence Farm, Vanhoy said it’ll cost between $25 and $40 depending on the height and shape.
