Chennai Rain, Morethan 10 lakh square meters of roads in various parts of the city were damaged in the recent rainy season, the first estimates of the Company revealed Chennai. Worse, more roads, join the list in the coming days.

According to a recent study conducted by senior company, at least 70 km of roads need immediate repairs at an estimated Rs 50 crore. A majority of these fall in areas like Kilpauk, Tondiarpet and Basin Bridge in the north of Chennai in the south and Nungambakkam Chennai. Topping the list is the area where Kilpauk, estimates show, about Rs 7 crore is needed to restore Anna Nagar Sixth Avenue, First Avenue and Kaliamman Koil Street in Valasaravakkam.

“Since we continue to receive rains, relaying of roads can not be taken after December 15. Until then, we’ll level with road construction debris to facilitate easy travel, “the company said Commissioner D Karthikeyan. The local body has decided to use the cold milling process to maintain the roads so that the level of the inner area is not destroyed, leading to flooding.

The contractors will be registered to use milling machines to collect a total of 9.4 lakh square meters of roads before relaying them with tar to a thickness of 40 mm. Another 40,000 sq m of damaged roads have been identified for relaying concrete cement, the sources said.

In north Chennai, parts Rajaji Salai, Tondiarpet High Road, Surya Narayana Chetty Street, Meenambal Salai, Red Hills Road Villivakkam, Pulianthope High Road, Meenambal Salai Manali Salai Kodungaiyur and are most affected. PT Rajan Salai, Velachery Main Road, Sterling Road, Rukmani Lakshmipathi Salai, College Road, Whites Road, CSIR Road, Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Salai were also damaged.

The state government is likely to fund the work of relays, according to sources. “Once stormwater drains are constructed and marked in some areas, issues of road will be resolved,” said Karthikeyan.

Several lanes as CP Ramasamy Road and Ramakrishna Mutt Road Mylapore and Anna Nagar Main Road in KK, where the pipeline laying work has been undertaken by Metrowater, remain unmotorable. “Restoring the road should be done in a scientific manner. Otherwise, a light drizzle will be sufficient to damage. Unless the company relays on the road with a good gradient, water will continue to stagnate on the roads, ruining the bitumen and aggregates, L Amirtham said, a resident of KK Nagar.
