Slr Digital Camera, Photography industry market research in the UK (January 2011 to September 2011 YTD) shows the digital cameras have dropped by 7%. September 2011 retail sales show that the overall market remained stable compared to last year with 0% growth. This was helped by a volume increase of 6% in the DSLR segment. Year after year, the segment of compact camera system (CSC) sales declined in September 2011, declining by 1%.

The global market for digital cameras fell 8% in September
Value paints a darker picture, which is indicative of the intensification of price competition, with the global market to fall by 8% in September. The three main segments fell in September and the segment of compact camera system experienced its worst drop in the value of retail sales (-17%) as major sales began in June 2009.

However, not all gloom, thanks to the interchangeable lens market. SLR segment is proving to be very strong, with an extensive growth. SLR segment has not had a negative volume growth since May 2010 and year to date in which the segment has grown by 9%, 10% in Q3 and 6% in September 2011. The fact that the value has increased 3% year to date, shows the strength of this market. It is true that SLR segment lost value by 1% in September, but this was against an increase of 20% in September 2010.

The segment of compact camera system is a major growth area for digital camera
The segment of compact camera system is still an area of ??growth for the digital camera market, despite experiencing the fall of the first volume of 1% in September, which was against the phenomenal growth of 314% in September 2010. Year-to-date retail sales are up, despite the high price reductions, and have grown by 36%. Pentax and Nikon is that they have entered the market in 2011, Fuji has announced that it will launch a compact camera system in early 2012. With the CSC increasingly visible to the public through a series of campaigns and more brands entering the market growth should continue.

The real driving force behind the fall of the DSC is the fixed target, but even here there is a bright spot. The relatively new superzoom category, compact cameras with 10x optical zoom or more, the volume grew by 61% in September 2011 and 45% so far this year.
