Challenger Disaster

Challenger Disaster, A rare Super 8 film of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion has surfaced more than 26 years after the disaster.

The Huffington Post reports it exclusively obtained the film from Jeffrey Ault of Orange City, Fla. Ault said it had been sitting in a box in his home and he hadn’t watched it since shortly after the explosion.

The film may be the clearest amateur footage yet of the disaster.

It seems the onlookers heard in the background weren’t entirely aware of what happened right after the explosion. It was only after the NASA public address announcer said “the vehicle has exploded” that one woman is heard saying “Oh, please don’t say that.”

One of the seven astronauts killed was shuttle commander Dick Scobee, who grew up in Western Washington and attended school in Auburn.
