Chaka was a featured vocalist in Rufus, a fund bank, with her hit songs, ‘You Got The Love’, ‘Tell Me Something Good’, ‘Sweet Thing’, ‘Stay’, ‘Everlasting Love’ and ‘Once You Get Started’, after which she launched her sole career.

She was born in North Chicago (Illinois, USA) on March 23, 1953 with her born name as ‘Yvette Marie Stevens’. She formed a group ‘Crystalletes’ at 11 as her first singing group. Afterwards, while in her high school, she joined ‘Afro Arts Theatre’ group. While working on the ‘Free Breakfast for Children’ program of Black Panthers in Chicago as a volunteer, she adopted an African name ‘Chaka’. In 1969, after quitting her school, she joined Lyfe group but left it afterwards to join a soul bank ‘The Babysitters’ where she replaced the lead former singer Baby Huey. It did not prove to a successful venture and she, along with Andre Fischer and Kevin Murphy formed ‘Rufus’. By this time she was married to Hassan Khan, a bass guitarist.

Rufus started in 173 on ABC label with a ’self titled’ album. However the album did not prove to be commercially successful. However afterwards, the group made its name as a successful funk group. In 1974, the group broke into R & B and pop music charts with a personal help of ‘Stevie Wonder’ with the hit ‘Tell Me Something Good’. Afterwards there were also lots of hits by the group.

Chaka Khan also has a successful solo career. She has won numerous awards for her solo songs.
