NCAA Hockey Tournament 2010NCAA Hockey Tournament 2010:If you are going to win a national championship you are going to have to work hard to get it. If you don’t believe me, ask the Norwich University Cadets.
Norwich claimed their third NCAA Division Three mens National title on Saturday evening, edging St. Norbert of Wisconsin 2-1 in double overtime. The Cadets labored for 99 minutes and 29 seconds before Pier Oliver Cotnoir put away his own rebound with 31 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Cadets the win. Norwich outshot St. Norbert 72-34, but St. Norbert goaltender and tournament MVP B.J. O’Brien stood on his head, making 70 saves to hold his team in the game. Ryan Klingensmith stopped 33 of 34 St. Norbert shots to get the win for NU.
The winning goal came in the 100th minute of the title game, allowing the hockey Cadets to claim the national championship in the 100th Anniversary year of the Norwich hockey program.

The Norwich women came up short in their bid to give the University a second national title on the ice. Norwich was beaten by defending national champion Amherst 7-2 in the women’s championship game in St. Peter, Minnesota. Amherst built a 5-0 lead before Norwich got on the board on third period goals by Brittany Casey and South Burlington’s Katie Leupp. Barre’s Sophie Leclerc assisted on both Norwich goals, finishing her Cadet career with 109 points in 83 games. The Norwich women finish the season at 20-6-5, an amazing accomplishment in just their third varsity season.

Later today the University of Vermont womens basketball team will meet Wisconsin in the NCAA tournament at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend. The Cats, a 10 seed at 26-6, will look to justify that seeding and return a little prestige to America East after injury depleted regular season champion Hartford got whipped by LSU 60-39 yesterday. Don’t want to jinx anything here, but I really think Vermont has a great shot to win this game.

Meanwhile the NCAA Division One mens Hockey selection show comes up later this morning, and despite their loss Friday night in the Hockey East semi-finals it appears the UVM hockey Cats will get a bid.
