It felt like a full moon at Carmike Cinemas’ Sikes Senter 10 Thursday afternoon, where fans started lining up about 3 p.m. for midnight showings of the much-anticipated film “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”

The movie is the latest in the “Twilight” series of books-to-film that have become a pop culture phenomenon, much like the “Harry Potter” craze.

Joveda Chesser, in her Swarovski crystal “Twilight Mom” T-shirt and with her copy of Stephenie Meyer’s “New Moon” in hand, was one of the first in line to see the film.

“I bought my tickets as soon as they were on sale. I got an alert about it on Fandango. I bought like 12 of them,” said Chesser, who was holding a place in line for fellow Twilight Moms and not for any teenagers, at whom the films books are aimed. “Tonight is mom night,” she said, adding that she and her fellow Twilight Moms were planning to take the kids to see the movie over the weekend.

“I’m pretty obsessed,” Chesser said of the whole “Twilight” phenomenon. She goes on “Twilight” related Web sites, has read the books several times and her ringtones on her phone are set to various songs from the “Twilight” soundtrack.

“It’s funny, but my husband says he’s a ‘Twilight’ widower,” Chesser said with a luagh.

Chesser was waiting in line with her friend Theresa Perkins. The two have camped out together for tickets to ZZ Top, Brad Paisley, Chris Cagle and Cher concerts.

“We camped out for two weeks for Toby Keith,” said Perkins, who added she wasn’t as big a fan of the “Twilight Saga” as Chesser but wanted to be where all the excitement was.

Advance tickets for “New Moon,” the second book and film in the series, went on sale about six weeks ago, and all 10 theaters showing midnight screenings of the film were sold out.

“It’s going to be bigger (than ‘Harry Potter’),” said Jacob Bissonette, general manager of Sikes 10. “We were selling them way farther in advance.”

He said not only were all the midnight showings sold out, but so were three showings for today — the 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows — by Thursday afternoon.

Chelsea Flores, 21, was first in line and armed with a sleeping bag. She was saving a spot for about five other family members, including her dad.

“My dad likes it (the series), shockingly,” Flores said.

Flores said she liked the book “Twilight” much better than “New Moon,” which continues the story of teen Bella Swan, who falls in love with a vampire, Edward Cullen. In “New Moon,” Bella grows closer to her best friend, Jacob Black, after Edward breaks up with her.

“I’m Team Edward,” Flores said of the two camps of fans — those who love Edward and those who love Jacob. “ … And I’m also Team Taylor, because Taylor Lautner (who plays Jacob in the film) is hot.”

Ernest Hernandez, 14, was saving a place in line for his aunt and sister and wasn’t planning to stay to watch the film.

“I have no idea what I’m getting out of it,” he said of waiting in line.

Halley Schroeder, 20, is “Team Edward, definitely,” she said. She was saving a place in line for two other friends who had to work. “I’ve been excited for weeks. I’ve been so stoked,” she said. “I’ve got T-shirts and posters and blankets. I’m, like, a ‘Twilight’ nerd.”

Etta Forrestal, an 18-year-old student at Midwestern State University, was busy doing her homework and studying for exams while she was waiting in line. “My friend got me hooked reading them,” she said. “It’s just a good love story.”
