Paula’s strongest sustained winds were 100 miles (160 kilometers) per hour, a notice from National Hurricane Center said at site 8 pm, Miami. It is “small” category 2 storms on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, the center said.

“At wind speeds of Category 2, there should be little or no damage, apart from broken windows, structural engineering in this region – namely, modern hotels in popular tourist resorts of Cozumel and Cancun “Tim Doggett, Senior Scientist at AIR Worldwide Corp. in Boston, said in an e-mailed statement. Modeler AIR is a risk to the insurance industry.

The official channel shows the storm, 60 miles east of Cancun, which is north to 9 mph off the coast of Yucatan. It should then turn north into the Yucatan this afternoon and brush western Cuba tomorrow.

“People will have to prepare for it to come ashore,” Jeff Masters, co-founder of Weather Underground, Inc. in Ann Arbor, Mich., said yesterday. “They are in the cone of uncertainty.”

The storm will not be a threat to U.S. oil installations in the Gulf of Mexico, according to Jim Rouiller, senior energy meteorologist for Planalytics Inc. in Berwyn, Pennsylvania.

Heavy Rain

The main impact may be heavy rainfall rather than damaging winds as Paula, a small storm, stays at sea winds of the storm hurricane strength of at least 74 mph extended up to 15 miles, and its tropical storm force winds of at least 39 mph to 60 miles an eye.

“It’s pretty small,” said Masters. “And the small size will make it vulnerable to rapid decomposition.”

Paula Hurricane ninth and 16th named storm, with winds of at least 39 km / h to form in the season in the Atlantic. The average season has 11 named storms.

“We do not often do so until the letter P in the alphabet, and it is only October,” said Masters. “On average we can expect one or two more named storms. It promises to be one of the busiest seasons of all time. ”

Drenching Storms

Last month, Tropical Storm Matthew soaked Honduras, Guatemala and southern Mexico. Tropical Storm Karl crossed the Yucatan on September 15 after coming ashore south of Cancun, and later reinforced by a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico before hitting the mainland, near Veracruz. Cancun is the site for two weeks of UN climate negotiations starting November 29.

Earlier this season, Hurricane Alex hit the region, as Tropical Storm Agatha, who came in off the Pacific. At least 300 people have been killed by storms this year, according to reports from several Central American countries.

Paula can produce up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain over western and central Cuba, with lesser amounts on the Yucatan, by the council.

“These rainfall amounts could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides,” the center said.

Rouiller said after Paula dispels models suggest another storm may form in the south next week from Jamaica.
