Box Office Records, The film earned more than $68 million in North American ticket sales on Friday and is expected to bring in a bonanza of $140-$150 million for the three-day weekend in the US and Canada alone, according to the respected industry website Deadline Hollywood.

The only films to perform better on their opening day are Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, the eighth in the franchise, which grossed $91.1 million, and two of the Twilight sequels, New Moon ($72.7 million) and Breaking Dawn Part One ($71.6 million).

Long lines of fans snkd outside cinemas around the world as the frenzy reached fever pitch with midnight showings.In major US cities, cinemas ran sold-out performances throughout the night.

The Hunger Games is the first in a trilogy based on the best-selling novels by Suzanne Collins set in a post-apocalyptic future where teenage girls and boys battle to the the death in a televised contest.
