Bowl Championship Series

Bowl Championship Series, First question. As the high-ranked teams fell like pins at a bowl-a-thon over a mad, mad weekend, the BCS was turned into: A. Chaos. B. Confusion. C. The SEC West Invitational.

The answer, of course, is C. But curious thing. So many national title wannabes foundered — Oklahoma State, Oregon, Oklahoma (bad weekend for contenders starting with the letter “O”) — that a bit of clarity was actually restored. If LSU and Alabama win out, we have an Ali-Frazier rematch, and nobody argues.

Troublemaker on deck? Arkansas, trying to take down LSU on Friday and make its own claim.

Next question. A good part of the nation today is:

A. Gagging at the thought of an all-SEC BCS title game.

B. Nauseous at the idea that the top three in the BCS standings could come from the same conference division.

C. Stanford fans.

D. All of the above.

The answer is D, but this feat is remarkable nonetheless. The SEC juggernauts have taken care of business, right down to Alabama driving for a touchdown in the final seconds against Georgia Southern, since 45-21 sounded much better than 38-21.

Next question. Who seemed the unlikeliest winner three days ago?

A. Iowa State, 0-56-2 all-time against teams ranked in the top six.

B. Baylor, 0-20 against Oklahoma, and coming off a one-point overtime escape against 2-9 Kansas.

C. Southern California, having lost its last two meetings with Oregon 53-32 and 47-20, and trying to stop the Ducks and their 21-game home winning streak, while starting three — count ’em — three freshman linebackers.

Doesn’t matter. They all won.
