Body Queen ElizabethBody Queen Elizabeth, The discovery of a woman’s body on an estate owned by Queen Elizabeth has become a murder investigation, British authorities said Tuesday. The remains were found on New Year’s Day in Anmer, part of the vast Sandringham Estate, by a local citizen out for a walk, police said.

No details about the body have been released, but it appears to have “been there for some time,” according to Detective Chief Inspector Jes Fry, The Associated Press reported.

“We are at the very early stages of the investigation and it could be a complex inquiry,” he said.

Authorities were conducting an autopsy Tuesday.

The queen’s Buckingham Palace office would not comment on the discovery, stating only that it was “a matter for Norfolk police,” Agence France-Presse reported.

In keeping with tradition, the royal family spent Christmas at Sandringham.

The hamlet of Anmer, about 115 miles northeast of London, is home to several dozen people and sits about three miles from Sandringham House, which has served as a private residence for British monarchs since 1862.

Sandringham Estate’s website says the entire estate is spread over 19,768 acres in Norfolk. Sandringham House and its gardens make up 59 acres, and there are 590 acres of woods and open countryside in a section that is open to the public free of charge all year.

There are also two stud farms and a fruit farm. The estate employs more than 100 full-time staff members.

The disturbing find of the body comes less than a year after the body of an American man was found in a park yards from Buckingham Palace.

Robert James Moore, who was obsessed with the royal family, had sent hundreds of letters to Queen Elizabeth and camped out near the Palace.

His body was discovered in March 2011, and it is believed he had been dead for nearly three years.
