1912: “According to the financial statement given out by the Lafayette College Athletic Association, every branch of athletics at Lafayette during 1911 was profitable. The larger amount of revenue came from football, which netted $1,917.03 on receipts of $14,685.69. The profit from baseball was $157.24 on receipts of $4,464.55. The track events, usually run at a loss, this year netted $10.50 on receipts of $687.75. The Athletic Association has proposed to build a new running track, which will cost $500, and to complete the covered grandstand at a cost of $1,400.”

^ Too cold to work: “Owing to the coldness of the building this morning, the employees of the Continental Silk Mill in this place (Phillipsburg) were obliged to lay off for the day. When the employees arrived they were unable to find the watchman. After standing around in the cold for some time it was decided to close down for the day.”

1962: The price is right: “Al Terry, of Bayonne, N.J., has had numerous nibbles at his offer to sell a two-family house for 69 cents, but no one has really gone for the deal hook, line and sinker. The low, low sale price, of course, is only the bait. The hook it covers is that the buyer must agree to move the house off Terry’s property at his own expense. Terry owns a supermarket next door to the 50-year-old house. He wants to use the land on which the building stands as a parking lot for his customers. Last Saturday, he nailed a large sign to the front porch which read: ‘Why pay more-house for sale-69 cents.’ Terry, who bought the 14-room house last July for $20,000, says he will have it torn down if there are no buyers.”

1987: Fighting to take a drag: “Warren County Vocational-Technical students petitioned the board of education to restore their smoking privileges, contending the ban imposed by the board is discriminatory and infringes on their rights.” A student spokeswoman “presented the board with a petition signed by 165 signatures, about half the student body, asking that students 16 and older be permitted to smoke with parental permission during their free time in a parking area between the academic and shop sections of the school. If students can’t smoke, she contended, teachers should be denied the privilege.”
