Bin Laden Compound, Security forces on Sunday completed the demolition of the three-storey compound where the US special forces had conducted a night-time raid on May 2 last year to kill the al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden.

“The process launched for demolishing the compound on Saturday evening was completed on Sunday night. The whole structure has been razed to the ground. It actually took some time as the process of demolition and removing the wreckage were going on simultaneously,” a senior security official said in Abbottabad.

Pleading anonymity, he said that precautionary measures were taken to avoid any mishap during the demolition process. “A number of meetings had taken place since the May 2 operation for demolishing the building, but the structure could not be demolished earlier due to difference in opinion among the officials concerned. It was finally decided to demolish the building on Saturday night,” the official said.

He had no clear answer when asked as to why this time was chosen to demolish the compound. A senior police officer said that an unannounced curfew was clamped in Bilal Town, where the compound was located, on Saturday evening and the area remained under curfew till late Sunday night.

He said to avoid any mishap, the Pakistan Army soldiers and police personnel were deployed in large numbers in the area. “The recent rocket attack by unknown people on military installations in Abbottabad had created a serious concern among the military authorities and local administration and, therefore, strict security measures were undertaken during the demolition process,” the police officer said.

The residents said debris of the building was still present on the spot. They also hoped that their suffering would finally end now that the compound had been demolished. They said the compound had aroused curiosity and attracted a large number of visitors as it had been the residence of the most wanted man in the world and the place where bin Laden was allegedly found and killed.
